Career: Tony Sumner
February 2000 Director, Pilgrim Projects Ltd
I co-founded this consultancy specialising in the development of open and distance learning materials in both text and electronic format. The bulk of our work has been at degree level with an emphasis on work-based learning and includes a major syllabus revision of 21 accountancy textbooks together with the conception and development of accompanying online courses. We have also been integrally involved in the development of SESAME, an ESF-funded programme intended to benefit SMEs and accredited by Anglia Polytechnic University. The successful management and completion of complex projects in short time scales has become a specialism.
1995 - 1999 Licensee Support Manager, Virata Inc

As Licensee Support Manager, I was responsible for a team that provided phone, email, and fax support for licensees, together with developing and delivering documentation and training courses on hardware and software for internal staff and licensees.

The strategy I adopted was to set up a secure web server-based support system with an interface direct to the companies' internal fault reporting system. This allowed licensees to submit problems direct and provided easy analysis, tracking and resolution of support issues, and an interface to the internal document control database to provide the automatic publishing of new and updated specifications, software releases, chip specifications and circuit diagrams to authorised licensees.

1984 - 1995 Senior Software QA Engineer, Acorn Computers Ltd

As Senior Software QA Engineer, I was responsible for planning, performing, managing and analysing the software test, QA and production process on software products ranging from operating systems (UNIX and RISC OS) to desktop publishing packages.

My previous experience at Acorn had involved direct liaison with major customers such as Reuters, Pickfords, and Olivetti, and software development and testing

1981 - 1984 Systems Engineer, British Aerospace Dynamics Group

At BAe I developed FORTRAN simulations of guided missiles and their sub-systems, in particular the turbojet engine and the missile control systems, which were then used to model the effect of tolerances on missile behaviour gained from test firings. During the Falklands crisis, I managed a small team of engineers performing test work on infra-red guidance systems.

1978 - 1979 Research Assistant, Hydron Europe Ltd
At Hydron I wrote BASIC programs used in the design and manufacture of soft contact lenses. I performed statistical analyses on defect rates to monitor the various stages of the process, and combined these with time and motion studies to produce system changes that improved defect rates.
